Actually, the essays and SIS do not involve persuasive writing. They need to respond to two different prompts, such as the ethical question a poster mentioned earlier, involving whether a student would give credit to the group when he of she made a discovery when no one else was around at that moment. The student is asked to describe the thought process he of she would go through in a particular situation, not persuade someone that he or she is right.
Here's the description frem the TJ site:

Also, an eighth grader who wants to be a minister may change his mind twenty times before he even graduates from high school. Over 70% of college freshmen change their majors. And, even if he never changes his mind, it's a benefit to any profession to have a great background in math and science!
