Yeah, they blew it, because the Kazakh skater was in 5th place and they didn't expect him to even medal, and they were so focused on the American gold opportunity.  But Scott Hamilton apologized later for being so focused on Malinin that they blew off the actual gold medal performance and didn't give the actual gold medal winner his due.
