It was such a great event- so many good skates. Happy for Alyssa Liu although I was sad for Kaori Sakomato- I love her skating so much and preferred her programs overall.

Why were the NBC commentators so dismissive of the Kazakh skater's chances for this Olympics when he just got the silver at the last world championship? Even after he'd landed a bunch of clean jumps, they were acting like he was barely a.podium.contender in this Olympics "here to plant seeds for the next one."

Obviously they expected Malinin to win and also I know the Japanese skaters had some blips too otherwise they could have bumped him. But they just seemed very uninterested in his performance - they were talking about other random things during it.

Yeah, they blew it, because the Kazakh skater was in 5th place and they didn't expect him to even medal, and they were so focused on the American gold opportunity. But Scott Hamilton apologized later for being so focused on Malinin that they blew off the actual gold medal performance and didn't give the actual gold medal winner his due.

I remember thinking after 2025 Worlds that, wow, this Shaidorov guy is the next big thing. But then he had a relatively underwhelming 2025-2026 Fall-Winter season - to this point - so people can be forgiven, IMO, for overlooking him as a gold medal favorite in the Olympics. I am thrilled for him, by the way.

That's really helpful - I don't follow closely to know about the other events.

Also is the technical vs artistry scoring different at Worlds vs Olympics? Bc they were very derogatory about how he artistry that but again he got the Worlds silver just a year ago.

I agree the Japanese skaters after him had more artistry in their choreography and performance, even to a lay observer

Shaidorov’s artistry isn’t there yet, but if past is prologue, it will come. A lot of great skaters, like Brian Boitano, were still relatively wooden and stiff when they were younger - their big jumps came first - and then they blossomed into artists. Maybe that will happen with Shaidorov (and Malinin).

Wasn't he heard saying after his performance waiting for his results that only if they had let him go to Beijing in 2022, he would be on that podium?

Yes, you heard right.

And as he is local, let’s just say that my reference to his arrogance is from direct knowledge of who he is.

New poster.
One doesn’t need deep insight to notice that he is unfortunately full of himself, which is not the end of the world for a 21 yo but I am surprised his parents don’t keep him in check.
He invented his own nickname, put it on a t shirt and wears it. He skates to his own inspirational quotes.
It’s normal for a young person to feel that their thoughts and feelings are more significant and novel than they are, but there needs to be an adult to tell them it’s ridiculous.

At the same time, he was extremely gracious to the gold medal winner, going to him immediately and congratulating/embracing him, and in his interviews afterward.

I liked how someone joked it was because he himself really needed a hug. I find it believable

Maybe, but it was a classy thing to do. Malinin didn't cry that he was robbed of a medal or try to denigrate his opponent. He pulled himself together within 5 minutes of his disastrous skate and immediately went to congratulate the Kazakh gold medal winner. It seemed sincere, and I was impressed at the sportsmanship.

Ilia couldn't claim he was robbed if he wanted to (though he kind of did claim that in his reference to Beijing while he was waiting for his score). He fell apart under pressure and singled his quad axel, fell twice during his program, doubled his quad loop, and his presentation was really poor for him, which is understandable given the breakdown, but even with 2 falls, and a really poor effort at presentation and skating skills, he still got a higher program component score (81.72) than Petr Gumenick (80.65), who skated a clean, beautiful program, landing all 5 attempted quads, with strong spins and he skated his entire program with fluidity, grace, and high quality skating and edge skills. In my opinion, Ilya got a much higher score than what he deserved for how he skated in the Olympics, and it calls into question the entire judging system and how the judges use the component score to play favorites and punish disfavored skaters, their coaches, or their countries.

Also, Ilya was not entirely gracious in defeat. He was heard on a hot mic saying he wouldn’t have skated like that if they had sent him to Beijing in 2022. He’s a young guy, and was hurt, and we all understand and empathize with the pressure he was under and wish him the best, but he’s not a poster child for being a gracious loser, and if anything, he was overscored for his performance in these Olympics.

Whatever. He wasn't 100% perfect, but he handled defeat graciously for a 20-something man who was in another class ahead of his opponents and had a stunningly bad skate after having not lost a single competition since 2023. I showed my kids how he quickly recovered and congratulated his opponent. He's certainly a better role model than certain people currently occupying in the Oval Office who can't accept losing, accuse others of cheating, and incite riots and violence when they don't win.
