Honest question: how many of these waitlisted or rejected stellar students would have gone if accepted? I have no more insight into VT admissions than your local skunk. I have huge sympathy for in-state students with first rate ability who absolutely wanted VT because it meets their interests and talents. All the folks writing how shocked they are with results don’t say if their kid would actually have gone. Many have their sights set on something else; they just expected the admit. My guess is VT is saving some seats for other regions of the state. They are have also been expanding class size, which isn’t all great bc housing is becoming a high profit private enterprise. To be fair, this is true at other universities too. To enthusiastic, in-state students with academic excellence, I hope you are admitted.
Kid was waitlisted for business. VT is their top choice. They have other great options, but are bummed today. VT was the one.
This happened to my kid the year VT dropped ED. Kid was high stats and rigor and good SATs, applying to business, so thought it was a target and VT was their first choice. They were very involved in their 3 season sport of running, including varsity all 4 years, team captain and state championships, but had little “service” outside of that to speak of. Got into JMU honors, WM, Pitt, Penn state, IU Kelley auto admit, SC, Clemson, etc, some with merit, and chose one of those. It’s worked out fine and they are having a wonderful college experience. But I am not a fan of what I thought was a well qualified applicant in the top 20% of their school at least, being shut out. This is where, like I typically do when I’ve been rejected from something, to remember its flaws. I’m sorry, PP.
