My DC applied to this school and was waitlisted. 4.85 WGPA, higher SAT, spent a lot of time on essays. Also OOS. Who knows?

"Yield Protection
Virginia Tech does not participate in yield protection.

Lying liars!! 100% lies.

One look at TJ scattergram would put to rest this lie.

The top TJ students who all get into T20, get accepted to UVA and are rejected by V Tech.

VT is not doing anything wrong, as none of these kids have any intention of going to V Tech. That is fair. What is wrong is the lying to the face by VT that they do not yield protect.

We applied in 2025 cycle and after looking at the scattergram did not apply to VT. Got in to a HYP and UVA and he would nearly certainly have been rejected by VT.

^^ Annnnnnd here s/he is. The TJ parent who comes back year after year to post this rant. So predictable.

That TJ parent is a complete liar. I am a TJ parent and can see the scattergram. There are some red X's in the sea of green, but we all know that VT cares deeply about their short essays and will reject people who don't take the time to polish their answers (despite being very high stats).

Yep. That parent is so recognizable. Every.single.year. they show up and pretend their kid is currently applying when they actually applied several years ago and were rejected. I wonder about their mental health.

What triggered you? Calm down! Are you always this much of a drama queen?

Are you back again with your usual song and dance?

It is just college admissions. Dont be so invested as if this is your baby. Take it easy. No one is putting VT down.

I have no more insight into VT admissions than your local skunk. I have huge sympathy for in-state students with first rate ability who absolutely wanted VT because it meets their interests and talents.

All the folks writing how shocked they are with results don’t say if their kid would actually have gone. Many have their sights set on something else; they just expected the admit.

My guess is VT is saving some seats for other regions of the state.

They are have also been expanding class size, which isn’t all great bc housing is becoming a high profit private enterprise. To be fair, this is true at other universities too.

To enthusiastic, in-state students with academic excellence, I hope you are admitted.

Kid was waitlisted for business.

VT is their top choice. They have other great options, but are bummed today. VT was the one.

This happened to my kid the year VT dropped ED. Kid was high stats and rigor and good SATs, applying to business, so thought it was a target and VT was their first choice. They were very involved in their 3 season sport of running, including varsity all 4 years, team captain and state championships, but had little “service” outside of that to speak of.

Got into JMU honors, WM, Pitt, Penn state, IU Kelley auto admit, SC, Clemson, etc, some with merit, and chose one of those. It’s worked out fine and they are having a wonderful college experience.

But I am not a fan of what I thought was a well qualified applicant in the top 20% of their school at least, being shut out.

This is where, like I typically do when I’ve been rejected from something, to remember its flaws. I’m sorry, PP.

+1000

VT has the most randomness and unpredictability of all of Virginia colleges by far and among its peers.

Don't give up hope. Many OOS kids accepted will end up declining and will open up many more spots!

Yes, but then VT will fill those spots from the OOS waitlist.

You would take WM over VT for engineering? Mkay.

I believe it. People choose schools for different reasons. VT was my son's #1 until they cow-towed to Trump and dropped all their diversity programs. Son got in for engineering 3.98 uw/4.6 w, 35 ACT, captain of robotics team, Physics tutor, tons of volunteer hours, Varsity football and lacrosse all 4 years in HS. He is opting for an HBCU. Of course the W&M person is choosing it for other reasons. My point is people pass up what others deem "superior" for all kinds of reasons you may not understand.

But that can be a foolish decision if the kid is not 100% committed to engineering or doesn’t have the chops to get through the weed out classes at VT. 80% of all students change their major at least once. My own UVA kid switched out of aerospace engineering into politics. Thank heavens he didn’t pick George tech, even though it was the premier program for aerospace.

Why foolish? They would just be in another program at what is still a good school. (My kid goes to UVA but it’s ridiculous to posit that it’s foolish to go to VT for something other than engineering. Give it a rest.)

DP. Don’t give up - the waitlist might come through. This is why VT needs to go back to ED!

DP. How on earth would that be a foolish decision? Switching from engineering to a liberal arts or humanities major at VT is no problem. And schools like VT and GT both have excellent liberal arts colleges.

With the weighted GPA, one kid with a 4.05 could have taken almost all non honors with a handful of honors sprinkled in and ended up with mostly As in low rigor classes, while another graduates with all honors plus 10 AP classes, but a few Bs in the mix and a very rigorous schedule.
