I would think the big cut comes between Sophomore and Junior years. That’s when coaches will have had an opportunity to get to know the kids and their abilities. And, the kids will need to assess whether they can keep up; is the playing time worth the work? And, academically they will be at the point where class scheduling gets much harder. Averages probably will look like 9 freshmen, 8 sophomores, 6 juniors, 5 seniors. And lots of redshirts.
Nah, nah, nah. Not men’s side. Kid’s D1 school has 5 five years and 6 Seniors. Only two true Freshmen. They pick up older players in the transfer portal from other competitive schools. The two Freshmen don’t see a minute of playing time. They prefer an older roster. You’ll sss how many kids on these rosters say “2 years at Dartmouth transferred to UVA”, etc
