Having said that, I don't think it will because there really are just too many out there.  I'm also for background checks but let's face it, it doesn't catch crazies who become nuts.  You can be mentally stable and develop issues that make it dangerous for the public because you own a firearm and in situations like that, background checks will not prevent the sales of the guns.

I think a more effective way of limiting the population to possessing, using and respecting gun ownership would be mandatory gun safety classes.  Even tack on a fee to for a license.  Make it DIFFICULT and a process to own a gun.  Ensure that those who really want to purchase one take the time to know how to use it.  Make it a painful process to do so and that way, most people unless they are really truly convinced they want to have one, will likely be unmotivated to buy them.

The issue is that it's too easy.  Too easy to find, own, use.  Too easy to misplace, misuse and everyone thinks they need one.  As long as this continues, there's no real stop gap to limit gun use.[/quote]
