Speaking as one who hates Trump: Congress using its authority to make his tax returns public sets a terrible precedent. I would have been fine if Congress had made a law requiring that future presidential candidates or presidents make their tax returns public, but they didn't do that. Trump was within his rights to not provide them to the public (he lied about the reasons why, but that is not particularly relevant here). I agree with those that say that he should have made a different choice, but he didn't. Congress has (and should have) the right of access to indivudal tax returns in order to prevent fraud, but this is an abuse of that right. It does nothing to prevent fraud, and it decreases the chance that the Supreme Court will side with Congress in the future on such matters, now that there is a history of abuse.
To add to this...... The job of Congress is to legislate. I fail to see any legislative purpose for obtaining the tax returns or releasing them publicly.
But Congress hardly legislates now. The SCOTUS effectively legislates far too much. The USA government is a free for all now and the GOP shoulders much of the blame. Why should Dems continue to play by the “rules”? We’re the Benghazi hearings done with legislative purpose in mind?
