Do you watch the behind the scenes clips? The actor who plays him says he's playing a "bad king but a good person" or something like that. It's intentional. I assume it's setting up a conflict that will need to be resolved.

I did and I find myself having to watch those after every episode so I have a clue what’s going on. And I don’t understand why the female characters changed from the time warp and all the male characters are still played by the same actors.  I just think it’s such a waste of what could be good material.  It’s poorly executed.[/quote]
