My guess is that he was the type who didn't mind the Nazis in the 1930s so long as they were only killing/repressing people in Germany and central Europe. There were lots of British and Americans in that group -- so long as the Nazis stayed in Central Europe, there were many people that would have been basically okay with that. Invading France and bombing London was a different story. [/quote]
