In exchange for what?  Debt run up to pay for a degree in a poor paying profession is not smart. Which is why following one’s passion is not always wise. [/quote]
And that is the student's responsibility. Majoring in a soft liberal arts degree at a fancy $50k a year college, is not smart.

But think what would happen if Cortez succeeded in her dreams. We would have millions of college students graduating with useless degrees, and for which we - the taxpayer - are on the hook.

I could see a scenario where the government paid the tuition for qualified students majoring in STEM areas where Americans are coming up short. So that's another way to do it - free college for specific majors to top-scoring students, who are likely to succeed.[/quote]

Yup. My niece got her Doctorate in Pharmacy and decided she hates it, so went for an MBA. Came out from all that and now complains about 250K plus in debt. Was offered a job in non-profit in which she can do 10 years and they will pay her debt. Her response is "what if I don't like it there?". Sigh. She has very practical degrees and still is all about her feelings.

I'd be ok with a state program where government pays STEM tuition but not a federal program. If the people vote for it in the state, I'm good.[/quote]
