Naviance from a mid-range FCPS hs: (Gives average scores from past 10 years of accepted students) 1.UVA: 4.37 GPA/1368 SAT --- W&M 4.32 GPA/1404 SAT (W&M kids have slightly higher SATs, UVA slightly higher GPA). 2. VT: 4.14 GPA/1304 SAT (Engineering not separated out, if engineering same as group above) 3. JMU 3.94 GPA/1220 SAT---GMU 3.89 GPA/1220 SAT (difference of .05 GPA not meaningful, also GMU on the rise in competitiveness) 4. VCU 3.62 GPA/1202 SAT---CNU 3.72 GPA/1200 SAT 5. UMW 3.65 GPA/1155 SAT and all the other public colleges/universities
This is the way I group/rank them in terms of terms of competitiveness as I think about reaches/matches/safeties for my NOVA hs daughter who will likely fall near median for W&M/UVA (4.25 GPA in rigorous courseload/1420 PSAT--we don't have SAT scores yet). I think of UVA/W&M as reaches. Definitely not a sure thing. VT as a match (DD not interested in engineering) though also not a sure thing. JMU and GMU as somewhere between safety and match(e.g. she'd probably get in and be eligible for their honors colleges etc.). Everything else as a safety. Her hs counselor agrees with this ranking/perception of reaches/matches/safeties. She suggests if W&M is top choice, we should apply Early Decision. If not, apply UVA Early Action.
