The best indicator of needing AAP is not the WISC, it is if you are actually able to do Advanced Academics. I don't understand why an academic test isn't given. I don't care what a kid's IQ is, I care whether a kid can keep up academically in AAP so the kid doesn't slow the other kids down. My kid would complain about the teacher having to dumb down the lesson and simplify work for a few kids who were on grade level. They did not demonstrate a need for a program focusing on advanced academics because they were working on grade level.
Disagree. It is common for gifted children to underachieve, and they are arguably the group who needs gifted services the most. AAP as it is isn't necessarily the type of gifted services that they need, but they undoubtedly need something. Also, looking purely at academic achievement would just reward high SES children who have already been enriched. It would leave behind lower SES or ESOL kids who are quite smart but have not had access to the resources to help them develop their talents. The school AAP referral form includes places to list the DRA and placement in advanced math. The two most recent report cards are also submitted, as well as several work samples from the school. Academic ability additionally factors into the GBRS. I'm sure the committee receives those materials for a reason and often uses them to reject kids who seem like they would struggle to keep up with AAP.
