NPR reports Azar restricted testing because Trump made clear he wanted low numbers of confirmed cases.
WOW!!!
I don't like Trump. Period. That said, there were ALREADY not enough tests. The CDC botched the test kits and refused the WHO test kits WEEKS ago. The testimony yesterday was so good. South Korea and America reported it's first cases of Coronavirus within one day of each other in January. In one month, both countries produced their own tests again within days of each other. The CDC sent out test kits across the country and when independent labs tested them, they failed to work. Instead of taking on the WHO test kits, CDC said all tests needed to be sent to their Atlanta lab for testing. The same lab that botched the test to begin with. South Korea tests 4,000 people per 1 million in their population. America tests 15 people per 1 million in our population. The kicker. The lead guy in charge of the test and testing in Atlanta that botched this whole thing to begin with, is still in charge there. Trump didn't restrict testing. There are not enough tests and there have never been enough tests. I hate Trump and want so badly for this to just be his fault, but this is such a deeper and wider problem. . We need to ALL be way more proactive at getting to the root of our CDC issues that has been ongoing for over a decade now.
Apparently the WHO test kits are not FDA approved.
FDA restrictions were lifted after the cluster in Washington State. Singapore has developed a rapid result test with 99% accuracy even in asymptomatic people. They open sources the technology and said they want everyone to be able to access it for the good of humanity. Yet here we are with our botched kits and we get excited every time some random university or lab says they’ve figured out a way to test it.
