I do wish people would stop saying this. Many times, the antivirals work, but I had a family member who tried everything, including every sophisticated, experimental treatment out there, and still died of AIDS.  It's a terrible death, and being on the antivirals can also be very debilitating.  HIV is making a comeback in some areas, and people minimizing the seriousness of living with the virus are not doing anyone any favors.  [/quote]

But it's not incorrect. Most people living with HIV do NOT have AIDS for many years. And it is also true that there have been many, many advancements in treatment since the 1990s. My uncle was part of the first AZT trials and eventually died of AIDS in the early '90s and things have improved greatly since then. THAT SAID, of course people should do all they can to protect themselves & prevent infection. And of course people respond differently to the meds. I'm sorry for your loss - we can definitely agree that it's a terrible death. [/quote]
