Because not going to work, which will cost you personally in either lost wages or in expended paid leave, or by reducing business income for a day, will actually lead to a change in government policy? What a bizarre and irrational presumption. Why does the government care if you go to work or not? Nor does the government care if you spend money. The linkage between employee/consumer behavior and government policy in this way is totally absent.
What else can we do? I have no ideas. Does anyone? I feel so helpless as the mid- terms are a long way off.
There are so, so, so many things you can do, PP. Small ones, but they are things you can do. Boycott Amazon, Whole Foods, Zappos, Abe Books, etc. anything owned by Bezos. Get off X, Meta, etc. all the billionaire-owned social media. Sell your Tesla. Buy a different hybrid or electric car. Research down-ballot candidates who are going to do something about affordability and give them each $10 a month. Go to protests when you can. Call your congressfolk once a week or once a month, whenever you have time. I have gone on a buying blackout because I'm just so disgusted that most of my dollars get into the hands of people who support Trump. I used to shop at Target and Home Depot, but no more. I'm only buying food and replacing things that wear out, like my front doorknob fell off last week, but other than repairing things that break, and putting gas in my car, I've stopped all my spending. I told my kids they are getting food, books and cash for birthdays and Christmas from now on. DH and I are no longer buying gifts that aren't food or books. If we all stop spending, the oligarchs will notice. Even if only 10% of us stop all our spending, they will notice. Each of us must make changes that hurt a bit to protect our country from these grifting thieves who are systematically destroying our country.
