What a bizarre and irrational presumption. Why does the government care if you go to work or not? Nor does the government care if you spend money. The linkage between employee/consumer behavior and government policy in this way is totally absent.

What else can we do? I have no ideas. Does anyone? I feel so helpless as the mid- terms are a long way off.

There are so, so, so many things you can do, PP. Small ones, but they are things you can do.

Boycott Amazon, Whole Foods, Zappos, Abe Books, etc. anything owned by Bezos.
Get off X, Meta, etc. all the billionaire-owned social media.
Sell your Tesla. Buy a different hybrid or electric car.
Research down-ballot candidates who are going to do something about affordability and give them each $10 a month.
Go to protests when you can.
Call your congressfolk once a week or once a month, whenever you have time.

I have gone on a buying blackout because I'm just so disgusted that most of my dollars get into the hands of people who support Trump. I used to shop at Target and Home Depot, but no more. I'm only buying food and replacing things that wear out, like my front doorknob fell off last week, but other than repairing things that break, and putting gas in my car, I've stopped all my spending. I told my kids they are getting food, books and cash for birthdays and Christmas from now on. DH and I are no longer buying gifts that aren't food or books.

If we all stop spending, the oligarchs will notice. Even if only 10% of us stop all our spending, they will notice. Each of us must make changes that hurt a bit to protect our country from these grifting thieves who are systematically destroying our country.

So cool! Lots of people who can afford to miss work!

I’m sad that you are proud that you can’t miss a day off work. We should all be able to take time off for things that are important to us. The obsession with living crappy life is astounding.

I teach every day. Kids (and their families) need teachers at school. Many Americans work jobs that are even more essential (health care workers) and/or have hourly jobs with no paid leave. Glad you can take to the streets.

Yes. It’s called solidarity.
Be thankful that people are willing to take time to defend the Constitutional rights of American citizens.

Has anything changed?

Good point.
In August 1939, African-American attorney Samuel Wilbert Tucker organized the Alexandria Library sit-in in Virginia (now the Alexandria Black History Museum).
Nothing changed
In 1942, the Congress of Racial Equality sponsored sit-ins in Chicago, as they did in St. Louis in 1949 and Baltimore in 1952.
Nothing changed
College students led a successful 1955 sit-in at Read's Drug Store in Baltimore, but the event received less widespread attention than the Greensboro sit-ins.
Nothing changed

And so on, and on, and on
And eventually, things changed

Hopefully more quickly this time

you know there is a middle ground, right? So if you have nothing to say about the tactics, then you do, in fact, agree with their tactics.

DP, but are these protests really about tactics? There are people who really don’t want ANY enforcement, or any consequences for those who do not comply with enforcement. There are people who protest the very existence of law enforcement, who were already protesting before anything at all happened.

When they shot a woman in the face for no reason, used a toddler as bait, and entered homes without warrants in violation of the Fourth Amendment, yeah, they are about tactics.

Biden and Obama deported millions without any of this and there were no protests.

This is not a good faith argument and you know it.

Meh. Don't immigrate illegally and then complain about the methods used to eject you.

Don't pretend the law matters and then shrug off the government breaking the law.

No idea if there is any effort to spread it to other states. Worth keeping an eye on. Regardless I will not be participating in the US economy on Friday.

I'm guessing you don't have kids in school?

Jesus Christ people. Freedom is a constant struggle. Every freedom you have is because someone fought and died for it. You can sacrifice just a tiny bit to continue enjoying the freedoms you have because others sacrificed for you.

This. It cracks me up that MAGA was the "don't tread on me" group rioting on J6. Now they need new signs that say please tread on me daddy trump.

I have that flag I ordered online months ago displayed in my yard. Nobody has messed with it.

Who do you expect to hurt?

I'm going to bash my head against a brick wall to show my outrage.
