Why are the same coaches more successful at SYC than they ever were at LEE MOUNT VERNON ?
They were successful at Lee Mt. Vernon and are still successful at SYC... Given that most of the Lee Mt. Vernon players followed their coaches to the new club. Not sure they would've had success at SYC without those players though.
Let’s assume this is true for a minute (players following). With exception of a couple teams that made a big move (after earlier going the other direction in at least 1 case), that influx was limited to a few players/age group while not losing a ton (although some people did leave). Consolidating talent in the small area covered by SYC/Gunston/LMVSC/South County programs gives those same coaches more talent to coach. I think the current coaches are an impressive group that has also managed to consolidate some kids that in years past have spread across those programs listed above, which kept them all in a similar competition level. Greater concentration of talented players coming together with good coaches is a good recipe for success.
How does the consolidation of talented players (which I agree happened) prove that the coaches are good? Nothing against anyone, but this is classic for this area. Couple clubs pull this off every few years and then it goes away just as quickly. Too many clubs, too many egos, too much money flowing for any of this to be sustainable.
Fair point - player consolidation improving the talent level doesn't prove the coaches are good. My opinion as an SYC parent is that at least the ones we've interacted with are good, but the proof will be if they can sustain and show continued development across multiple age groups. Consistently good results across a period of time and continued development are important and that will take a little while to show.
I think I'm just jaded. I've seen so many coaches in this area make a name for themselves on the back of recruiting from other clubs. It always falls apart for one reason or another (although money is usually the culprit). At some point, someone will turn around and ask why the TD's friend is paid more or getting the better teams, a board member will make noise about their kid's placement, or some other nonsense we've seen 1000 times before. I'm not even sure another club would take it's place, but rather it would return to the mean. All this said, please just pick the team with the right coach for your kid, not the right $.02 crest on it's jersey.
