You can scream and cry all you want, but Trump will nominate an extreme conservative and a Republican Senate will quickly confirm. Is it fair? No, absolutely not. But that’s what’s going to happen. And the Dems won’t pack the Court if they win the Presidency and the Senate (and that’s a big if), because then the Republicans would just do the same down the road. This is all very nasty and sad, but it’s what will happen. End of debate. End of story.
Glad to see someone has already reached the Acceptance phase of Grief.
I don’t know about that. Susan Collins and lisa murkowski said they wouldn’t support a vote. Even Lindsey Graham might be threatened by actually having to face voters this year.
What would they do after November 3?
Collins has said that she would not vote in lame duck session. Murkowski has not said. However, both Grassley and Romney have also said, like Collins, that the would not vote in 2020 for a SC nomination. However, after the election, as long as Martha McSally is not certified the winner, then her appointment expires on November 30. That gives McConnell a 3.5 week window that includes Thanksgiving weekend (from Nov 4-30) to hold Senate judicial hearings, questions from Democrats, a vote, then hold a full Senate hearing, questions from Democrats, and a vote. And that assumes that AZ does not certify Mark Kelly as a winner before 11/30 AND that he can convince Murkowski to agree to push a rushed vote through a lame duck Senate AND that he does not get any other defections over that time. Honestly, while it is possible, it's going to be an uphill battle for the next 2.5 months for McConnell to get this done.
