In response to a Star Tribune request, his campaign provided a two-page military record confirming the dates and his ranks. The Minnesota National Guard also confirmed the outlines of his tenure, saying that Walz served from April 8, 1981, until May 16, 2005. "Walz attained the rank of command sergeant major and served in that role but retired as a master sergeant in 2005 for benefit purposes due to not completing additional coursework," according to the statement from Army public affairs officer Lt. Col. Kristen Augé. https://www.startribune.com/walzs-24-years-in-national-guard-get-renewed-scrutiny-from-gop-opponent-who-didnt-serve/600216280
I know the GOP is trying to Swift Boat him and that's why all of this talk about Walz's military service; but to me that's honestly one of the less interesting parts of his resume. Coach, public school teacher, map enthusiast! These aren't normally things you see in the background of a guy who rose to become governor. It's refreshing. I don't think military service, or lack thereof, has really moved the needle for any Presidential campaign in 20 years or more.
No, but showing that the oppositions "big arguments" against your candidate is still important. In this case, they went big on touting Vance's military background, but Harris campaign can now show that Walz's military background is much more comprehensive than Vance's. Vance served 4 years. Walz served 24 hears. And Walz retired honorable with full benefits. Just not at the highest level he served under, because he did not complete the requirements for the rank he held for the last few months of his military career. He retired to run for Congress. But the Trump campaign is trying to make a big deal out of it, when it isn't a big deal at all. It is important to show they have very little working against Walz, whereas Vance has a lot going against him. Harris has shown that she's outraised Turmp. She's chosen a better running mate than Trump. She has better support than him.
