Quite. I’ve been in the DC area for two decades now, and I must say, the provincialism is almost impressive at times. This is a region that prides itself on education, and yet I routinely encounter parents who, if pressed, would struggle to name the countries in the UK, let alone understand the gulf between American and British university admissions. My son’s going into his third year at Oxford, my daughter’s just starting her Honours at St Andrews, and yet someone once kindly informed me that St Andrews “isn’t very good” because the American admit rate is apparently 35%. Northeastern, I’m told, would have been a far better choice, since its admit rate is so much lower.

At this point, I’ve accepted that trying to explain the difference is a bit like reciting Shakespeare to a Labrador. Endearing, but ultimately futile. I simply nod, sip my tea, and remind myself that the world is full of mysteries best left unsolved.[/quote]
