I choose to use U.S. News rankings as a reference, and I interpret schools ranked in the top 50 by U.S. News as being among the top 50 schools. Why is this perspective so controversial? For example, Case Western and Tulane are not currently ranked in the top 50, so I do not consider them top 50 schools. Similarly, if Northeastern University (currently ranked 54) moves into the top 50 in the future, then it would be considered a top 50 school. It’s a simple and straightforward approach.

For those who dislike U.S. News rankings, my suggestion is simple: don’t rely on them. If the rankings are truly unimportant, why do you seem so well-versed in them?

According to the result, the general public clearly chose Northeastern over Rutgers or UGA.
In the real world, Northeastern is ranked higher than Rutgers or UGA by the general public.

No, more applications doesn’t mean the general public thinks a place is better school overall. There could be any number of reasons why a school might get more applications separate from its educational quality, like the application requires no additional work (Northeastern doesn’t have a required supplemental essay), a school is closer to home, or a school is more affordable.
