Like, if going to public results in you being the valedictorian, whereas at private you would have just been top 10% or something, then it's a boost. If going to public results in you being an average student and you would have also been an average student at a private, probably better off at the private where you can get admissions help and attention and opportunities for activities to help you stand out.
