From VT website: What is Virginia Tech's history of selecting students from the waitlist? Last year, we were able to offer 2,458 applicants from the waitlist. In 2021, we were able to offer 3,286 applicants from the waitlist. In 2020, we were able to offer 3,961 applicants from the waitlist. In 2019, we were unable to make any offers. In 2018, we were able to offer 1,896 applicants from our waitlist. In 2017, we were unable to make any offers. As you can see, the number of students ultimately receiving offers from the waitlist is highly unpredictable and variable.
This makes it sound like most years VaTech ultimately offered admission to hundreds/thousands of students on the waitlist? That seems much higher than most schools? Below is the information from the 2020-21 Common Data Set. Combined with the information on the website above, does this establish that 3,286 of 4,924 were offered admission but only 86 accepted (presumably because by July most had made other plans)? Am I missing something? Number of qualified applicants offered a place on the waiting list: 8,690 Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 4924 Number of wait-listed students admitted: 86
In 2021 they sent my daughter a letter saying they were unable to go off of the waitlist. We assumed no one came off the waitlist so I am surprised to see these numbers. However, she was an engineering major. I believe no one will come off the waitlist for majors like engineering and business, sciences, etc. No. I read it that 8690 applicants were notified they were put on the waitlist. Of those 8000+ students, 4924 decided they wanted to go on the waitlist. The other almost 4000 applicants decided to not be put on the waitlist. Only 86 were ultimately offered a spot. How many enrolled is unknown.
We are interested in knowing these waitlist statistics since my DD was waitlisted (NoVA resident, 3.8 UW/4.2W, 33 ACT). How are others reading them? For 2021 what does "were able to offer 3,286 applicants from the waitlist" mean? It seems inconsistent with "Number of wait-listed students admitted: 86"? Is the 86 number actually "enrolled" not admitted? Reading the website waitlist FAQs and common data set together does seem to suggest that in 2021 8,690 were offered waitlist spots, 4,924 stayed on the waitlist, 3286 were offered spots off the list and 86 students enrolled off the waitlist. Otherwise, what does the 3,286 number refer to? In the alternative, if VATech only offered 86 students admission off the waitlist, I would assume that a lot of student who stayed on the waitlist will have moved on. Just like the regular admissions cycle, wouldn't VA Tech need to make a lot more offers than spots to fill the final spots? But offering admission to 3,286 of 4,924 sure doesn't sound right either.......
