It’s a great idea. And it will be even better if there can be a wall built around McLean to keep the low-lifes out. Residents could get a tag that would allow quicker access at the gate. Visitors would have to pay a fee and undergo a check.
Agreed. And anyone moving to McLean would have to pass a background check to make sure they are of the right demographic. As a PP mentioned up thread, we don’t our resources to help those living in Annandale or Springfield. So we must ensure that only a certain demographic can move to McLean.
Stop making this about demographics, McLean has a very diverse population. These guilt trips don’t work anymore, we want better for our community and that’s what is behind this idea.
it's entirely about demographics, rich people don't like title I schools getting more funding and attention so they want to break away to keep their tax dollars away from the poorer schools. Local control is the usually euphemism used for secession when the rich part of the district breaks away from the poorer, it's a popular trend in the south https://www.vox.com/2019/9/6/20853091/school-secession-racial-segregation-louisiana-alabama
It's not about avoiding integrated schools; it's about taking care of neglected schools (and roads, commercial areas, and so on). Feel free to make your case about why people in McLean should gladly accept, for example, FCPS spending $40M to expand West Potomac HS to 3000 seats (in large part, by the way, so kids won't have to attend under-enrolled Mount Vernon a few miles away) but saddle McLean HS with a cheap modular. But you might want to read up on tipping points first.
Mclean high is so neglected that it's only one of the best schools in the state not the best school
these ratings reflect scores not facilities. Should kids be going to school in run down, too small buildings even if they are smart?
McLean's test scores are declining now. Enrollment is down this year when it should have been up. People are starting to vote with their feet. The high school is a poster child for a neglected facility: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/jan/27/virginia-teachers-strike-amazon-tax-breaks Good to strike out now and work towards greater autonomy before the area ends up run down like other parts of Fairfax.
