Just wondering people's thoughts on blowouts in travel soccer. Is it appropriate for the other team to run up the score. In Rec, the coaches get a lot of grief from the league for blowouts where the score is more than 6 goals apart. But in travel, since it is travel (and top teams) do different rules apply?
They shouldn't, but we have seen many, many complete blowouts in regular season play with not too much attempt to damper them. When my husband coached, he would have the kids complete a long set of passes before anyone was allowed to shoot---or only use non-dominant foot. Kids were played out of position---goalie at striker, etc. I've seen it backfire and become more humiliating---like when every kid on the winning side is saying really loudly 'guys we can't score, etc'. OR--kids going right up to opposing goal and then turning around and dribbling back. At the littlest ages---there should be some type of mercy rule. IN TOURNAMENT PLAY---completely different standard since goal differential is important. But---tournaments are, for the most part, better matched up teams.
I actually think that a X number of passes makes no sense. Usually the team that is getting whopped isn't pressing anyway, so the backs play a couple of passes back and forth to each other. If they don't, I think it causes bad habits anyway. I think the losing team adding a player if allowed is best. The winning team could remove a player. I agree to have the better players play GK and/or defense, things like that. You still want the kids to try and make good decisions, you just want it harder for them. Another is to back the press off and try to win the ball in your defensive half and, when you do, play the GK and start from the GK.
i completely agree with removing/adding a player. I don't know why this isn't done. Why not work it out so that everyone is challenged??
Because it's not Rec. I think taking the taking the players at HT and letting them know that playing from the back and shooting outside of the 18yd line with either foot as well as rotating FWD, MID, and DEF should be enough. The other team know already that they lost, no sense in humiliating them by having to play keep away or you yelling out the handicap rules.
