A little insight into her “influencer” money… I’m a blogger turned social media influencer (gag-that word) with only a little over 20,000 followers on Instagram and make an average of $1,00 per paid post. My community is engaged but NOTHING like Jen’s. And I have a friend with a following about Jen’s size who brings in no less than $10,000 per post. So even if she did two sponsored posts a month she’d be killing it. Plus, once you start to gain a following and have a few successful campaigns under your belt you can ask for more incentives. I suspect that almost all of her travel is covered in by sponsors. So she’s bringing in lots of money (and perks) through social media, but she’s also still getting paid royalties on her past books. I don’t know a lot about the publishing world but would guess those numbers are nothing to sneeze at either. Plus she has her book club, plus whatever course she happens to be selling at the time, plus the sale of the lake house… she is NOT desperate for money. But I do think it’s worth mentioning that even the social media sponsored posts and other streams of revenue probably do not compare to what she was making for all of her speaking engagements before. So even though she’s not desperate for money the way we might view it, she’s probably living in a state of constant anxiety because social media culture is as fickle (if not more) than the conservative world she was alienated from, by her own grandstanding and attention seeking. So it kind of feels to me like she’s trying to make every penny she can because she doesn’t see herself as someone with a safety net anymore. Also, I think she’s always viewed her followers as a means to an end. The end, of course, fame and money. It’s just a lot more obvious now than it ever has been before.
