If you have a son on a red team I would not advocate moving to black just to win more games unless he's riding the bench. There is a HUGE difference at VYS between the red and black teams especially as they get older. I have 2 kids there one on red and one and black. The red team gets everything and the black team is just there to help pay the bills. Club fees have a $100 difference over the course of the year and the red team gets an additional practice each week, practices over the winter, gets better coaches, goes to more and better tournaments etc... It's my biggest complaint of VYS.
I have had kids play on VYS Red, VYS Black ... and even other VYS team, White I think it was ... over the years. I didn't notice any real difference between the Red and the Black in terms of what you mentioned ("the red team gets everything") ... certainly the Red and Black teams frequently mixed it up during practice. Coaches were both pretty good, professional, etc. I wasn't happy with the VYS White team experience. Not that it was anything they didn't "get" ... but they did not have enough players, several games with no subs, or even playing down a man because not enough players showed up ... there was never any use of Black or Red players to support the team in those cases ... the coach was disinterested and the players discouraged etc. This was a few years ago at this point.
