This mother made many mistakes...she pulled a troubled, anti-social, kid out of school to homeschool him (thereby further isolating him), she collected tons of guns and took this unstable kid to shooting ranges (thereby sending the message that using weaspons was ok and facillitating him being "armed and dangerous"), She does not appear to have reached out for help for her son and kept the problems she was having with him "secret", yet she often went out drinking to talk about BS with acquaintances. She may have had her own mental health issues that went unchecked/unaddressed. She should have seen how sick her son was and done everything to help him, living in denial and isolating him, while giving him access to weapons and instruction on how to use them....YES...this mother is most definitely responsible!
Wow. May you never walk a mile in her shoes.
New PP, but I feel OK to judge her even in her death, maybe it's venting. But the PP pretty much surmises many of her numerous failures, for which, if she were alive, she would have been legally culpable, I am sure, but I will let lawyers opine on that if they wish.
Fine. Maybe I should have said "may you walk a mile in her shoes."
As someone with a mentally ill family member, I don't feel that it's that unusual to be in complete and total denial of someone's mental health problems, even though the person is so clearly off the rails. I have seen family members who are physicians themselves go through this rationalization, saying "oh, it's fine, we're dealing with it, he/she is functioning, we're ok for now," when dealing with someone who is saying and doing totally batshit crazy things and refusing any sort of treatment or counseling. If this is coming from someone with medical training, a doctor, who should know better, what do we expect from Nancy Lanza? She was trying to "handle" her son pretty much on her own. There is such a stigma against mental illness and it is so powerful it is unbelievable. No one wants to admit to themselves that the precious baby they held in their arms is capable of hurting them, or is "crazy." Some people do, but it is because they have good insight and a strong sense of self, not because our culture or community supports people with mental illness.
