Take a walk around the city. Talk to people. Crime is up by a ton. Police are just making it harder and harder to report it. I personally went to the police station to report a crime a couple months ago. There were two people in line in front of me. No reports were actually filed as the police basically refused to do anything. This is the same as I have seen on the streets. These stats are fully fake.
This. I get crime alerts, official and victim-reported, in my vicinity (ward 3) and the number of carjackings, muggings and shootings has gone up dramatically in the past two years. As well as armed and unarmed robberies at the CVS’s and Targets, such that there is nothing on the shelves. I have lived here 40 years and have never before worried about walking places in my neighborhood. I do now. And I’ll move out of DC if it doesn’t improve soon.
+1. There were 5 cars broken into on our Ward 3 block last week. Only one person called the police. Because they could not honestly identify if anything was stolen (they thought some change and a charger) no report was taken. So there is no record. These crimes never happened.
Someone was in our car in Ward 3 a few weeks ago, but it was because we accidentally left it unlocked, and all they took was a can of snacks that we'd left in the car. I'm not going to bother calling the police to make a report about something with no property damage, no chance of figuring out who did it, and nothing of value taken.
... and also, I should add, it was my fault that something was taken, anyway, as I didn't lock the car.
What’s the point of this story? Crime isn’t that bad because you’re too stupid to lock your car?
No, the point is, of course people aren't reporting every tiny little thing that happens. I also wouldn't consider taking something out of my unlocked car a crime. I was replying to someone complaining that "crimes never happened" because people didn't call the police, by explaining why I didn't call the police.
Of course it is a crime - and you should report it if only to be able to have the crime stats more accurately reflect the state of DC safety.
It's not worth even minimal effort to report the theft of a $6 item from my unlocked car, sorry. I think we are all aware that leaving your car unlocked means it's possible someone will take something from it, and I don't think we need to know about everything taken from an unlocked car to get an accurate picture of safety here.
