This. I get crime alerts, official and victim-reported, in my vicinity (ward 3) and the number of carjackings, muggings and shootings has gone up dramatically in the past two years. As well as armed and unarmed robberies at the CVS’s and Targets, such that there is nothing on the shelves. I have lived here 40 years and have never before worried about walking places in my neighborhood. I do now. And I’ll move out of DC if it doesn’t improve soon.
+1. There were 5 cars broken into on our Ward 3 block last week. Only one person called the police. Because they could not honestly identify if anything was stolen (they thought some change and a charger) no report was taken. So there is no record. These crimes never happened.
Someone was in our car in Ward 3 a few weeks ago, but it was because we accidentally left it unlocked, and all they took was a can of snacks that we'd left in the car. I'm not going to bother calling the police to make a report about something with no property damage, no chance of figuring out who did it, and nothing of value taken.
... and also, I should add, it was my fault that something was taken, anyway, as I didn't lock the car.
What’s the point of this story? Crime isn’t that bad because you’re too stupid to lock your car?
No, the point is, of course people aren't reporting every tiny little thing that happens. I also wouldn't consider taking something out of my unlocked car a crime. I was replying to someone complaining that "crimes never happened" because people didn't call the police, by explaining why I didn't call the police.
Of course it is a crime - and you should report it if only to be able to have the crime stats more accurately reflect the state of DC safety.
It's not worth even minimal effort to report the theft of a $6 item from my unlocked car, sorry. I think we are all aware that leaving your car unlocked means it's possible someone will take something from it, and I don't think we need to know about everything taken from an unlocked car to get an accurate picture of safety here.

I was out in his district on Saturday night and it was a ghost town except for people asking for money. All the bars and restaurants were mostly empty in what used to be a lively strip.
This is so unacceptable. Also, he claims on his Twitter/X that people were getting shot in his alley and on his street 20 years ago. Doesn't he represent a very exclusive enclave in Woodley Park? It doesn't sound even remotely believable.
In his profile picture he’s wearing a bike helmet, which explains all I need to know about him and the credibility of what he says.
You're a deplorable human being. I hope you don't/didn't procreate and that your bloodline dies with you.

Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:So MPD should overcommit resources even more to the neurotic pearl clutchers of upper NW dc rather than to the areas that are actually dangerous and have lots and lots of crime because someone's grandma happened to be in a cvs when some people shoplifter or they read about an argument between two people that turned violent in an apartment complex they don't live in on their local listserv?
This is outright dishonesty. No one who wants more resources committed to fighting crime in Ward 3 wants fewer resources for fighting crime in Ward 7 and 8. We know clearly who are the people who are against resources going to Wards 7 and 8 - defund the police folk who have consistently argued that those Wards are overpoliced and "targeted." The ACLU just came out to oppose an expansion of the camera program where 42% of the cameras were in Wards 7 and 8. These were the same arguments that shut-down the efforts to prosecute gun violations federally, and the same arguments the Council used when it made the effort to cut police funding in 2020.
This is the completely dishonest two-step defund types do. Say we need fewer enforcement resources going to Wards 7 and 8 because focusing them is racist targeting. Then turn around and say we need to take resources away from Ward 3 because it's unfair that 7 and 8 don't have more enforcement resources going to them.
It starts with the ANCs and works it ay up to the Councilman. These are policy choices. Neighbors, we don’t have to continue to
live in fear if we elect some reasonable people. In the next ANC election don’t forget the ANC 3C (Cleveland Park) was at the forefront of the defund the police movement.
