We also have a critical shortage of police officers, teachers and medical professionals. The current youth is really interested in work life balance and putting their own mask on first—they just are not looking to these careers that require a lot of self sacrifice. The only answers I see are— 1) significantly raise pay 2) offer citizenship in a change for X years of service 3) increase free student loans/tuition programs 4) institute national mandatory service which could be military, teaching, police, medical, or civilian conservation corp. pick one and give the country at least 2 years of it.
4 all the way! We need a national service requirement for young people between 18-21. Let them choose military or civilian service. Offer some program to tackle climate change preparedness issues and the like. Defer for college if you want but then immediately serve after undergrad. That would give me hope for the future.
I think we should do this as well. We are raising generations of kids who lack work ethic, who have no sense of being part of anything, who don't understand how anything works, or where anything comes from. And that's where a lot of our problems come from. I think serving the country in some form would do a lot to improve this.
I'm a vet and I'm opposed to this. The military is our defense organization-- it is burdened enough with that task, without also babysitting 18-21 year olds who are out of shape and lack motivation. Just no. And the reason our youth are like this is due to our culture, so start there if you want to fix that problem.
Every soldier once started out as an 18-21 year old who was out of shape and lacking motivation, needing babysitting and training. But that said, go back and check what was actually posted, it wasn't about putting them all in the military, it also included things like having them serve in medical corps, teaching, and other roles as well. Many 18-21 year olds have health issues that would preclude them from going into the military, but would not exclude them from other types of things. And, not all kids want to join the military, but would be willing to do other things for their country. An expanded ASVAB type of process could help determine what kinds of things would be a good fit.
