Doing some research for my DC who is a sophomore. Recent grad outcomes appear very pedestrian and it appears many are struggling to find work. Are the glory days for Harvard behind them? Serious question. I cannot find reasons why Harvard is any better than other schools in the top 50 USNWR rankings. Recent matriculants I have known personally are not that impressive and seem to be a blend of legacy, VIP and athlete. What am I missing? Perhaps it is a dying brand - what am I missing? Does the emperor have any clothes here?
I never went there, but I lived near there and used some services there that were open to the public. In my opinion, UVa, the William & Mary and UMd. are wonderful schools. There’s no reason for most kids who would be in-state at those schools, and maybe get some merit aid, to spend an extra $200,000 or more over four years to go to other schools. No decent, polite, honorable Harvard alum is really going to look down on an equally bright person who went to UMd. because of financial constraints. People who look down on other people because family finances affected their school choices are shallow boneheads, and that kind of snobbery is a stain on Harvard’s reputation, not UMd.’s. But, on the other hand, Harvard has a beautiful campus in a fun city, with superb public transportation and excellent access to fun jobs and internships. A lot of its student organizations and support services, such as its school paper, are the best in the world. Maybe an English professor would be a jerk, but, if you have a job at the Crimson or the Lampoon, why would you care about an occasional bad English teacher? So, Harvard might not be worth $200,000 more than UVa, but it’s a wonderful place for a student who can afford it. Another consideration is that Harvard offers excellent financial aid. That means that, for many students, going to Harvard will be much cheaper than going to their community college and living at home. For those students, going to Harvard is a spectacularly good deal.
