His policies on the frail elderly people in nursing homes and assisted living is criminal. During Covid, he changed policy so that an elderly, bed-bound person in a nursing home only needs to have a grand total of 2 hours of care per day. AND changed the rules so that the people actually doing the care have ZERO medical background and only need to do a few hours of training, which can be done online. These people can administer medications to the elderly! Two hours includes total time to feed, bathe, clothe, administer medications, transfer from bed to wheelchair, assist with toileting, etc. Prop up an elderly person, stick their tray in front of them, come back 30 minutes later and these untrained, minimum background, minimum wage check people can and will fudge the numbers and say they spent 30 minutes assisting them eating. Do this times three and you are already almost at 2 hours. This is why the elderly are sitting around in the same clothes for days on end, are not getting their medications on time (or at all), are lying in urine, getting deep bed sores, or are dying. The big corporations that own these places are laughing all the way to the bank with U.S. taxpayers money in the form of Medicare/Medicaid which they are raking in. PLUS the money that people are paying on their own from their savings. DeSantis has fully led/facilitated this current state of affairs. His so called inspection agency, Agency for Health Care Administration is nothing but a joke. They will approve any facility as long as the people aren't literally being chewed on by rats: Leaking roof, broken windows, mold growing on the walls, bathrooms that don't work? No problem. Substandard food, verbal abuse from staff, no activities? No problem. Failure to keep generators in operational use? No problem. Failure to do background checks on workers? No problem. Failure to check recent licensing of nurses? No problem. Failure to treat residents with dignity and respect? No problem. Many long-term care facilities are over-medicating the elderly to keep them quiet and keep their workload down. And yes, that includes the very high-priced ones.
