Diana grew up in a house on the Queen’s Sandringham estate before her father became Earl, and her grandmother was a Lady in Waiting to the Queen Mother. She had to understand what the life entailed. I do think she was very naive about her relationship with Charles. [/quote]

Those close in the line of succession needed the Queen's permission to marry.  Margaret was not allowed to marry a divorced man. Things have relaxed, but it's not like these royals are going to make a surprise engagement announcement on the family. Before mass media, those marrying into the royal family wouldn't have faced the same media scrutiny that seems to cause so many problems.[/quote]
