Mrs. Doubtfire
Why couldn’t this get made again? I don’t recall anyone making fun of transgender people or people who cross dress but identify as heterosexual. He was a dad who happened to dress up as a woman to go undercover to be close with his kids.
Your recollection is based on the fact that you adhered to social norms of the times -- its is why most of us "loved" these movies then and are appalled by them now. In some ways they were groundbreaking by putting on the screen issues and topics that had been taboo. They move the world forward. But looking back, they were still of their time. When you rewatch it, you will notice how terrible it is about this issue Here's a well-balanced essay addressing this issue in the film: https://aninjusticemag.com/the-pain-of-revisiting-mrs-doubtfire-c6e39a71c74d Another great moving recently criticized though it attempted to be 'forward thinking' on feminism, is "Tootsie." The excellent documentary "This Changes Everything" -- a huge must see for all -- highlights what was awkwardly backward about the film from the female point of view.
