Statement from CM Silverman https://www.popville.com/2018/04/councilmember-silvermans-response-to-being-called-a-fake-jew/#more-203458
OP here, and THIS is what I've been trying to communicate, not only on this thread but on the adjacent one focused on White. (Clearly, Silverman is more articulate than I am.) I echo ALL of her comments, but want to draw out her remark that we cannot blame ignorance for antisemitic remarks (and attitudes), as was attempted on Trayon's behalf, but rather we must assign the blame where it belongs - to the association with and poisoning of black minds by Farrakhan and his followers.
Straight up...if you really want to assign the blame to where it belongs then its not enough to point a single solitary finger at Minister Farrakhan and the NOI and tell legislators that they are officially "off limits". That doesn't interrupt the indoctrination of antisemitism nor does it impede the spread of antisemitic influences in impoverished black communities. Truly assigning the blame to where it belongs requires two fingers at least - yeah point one at Farrakhan and the NOI, but without question another finger needs to be pointed at our criminal justice system which is in dire need of reform. Where do you think the indoctrination occurs and why do you think the indoctrination is so successful? Because while the widespread NOI Prison Reform Ministry's main priority is to invest time and energy into rebuilding the lives of the 2+ million black men imprisoned in this country, our local, state and federal agencies main priority is simply building more jails to hold all those black men in. Society conveniently forgets all about them once they get locked up and leaves them to rot behind bars without a care of the physical conditions they're being kept in or the psychological environments they're exposed to that can potentially exacerbate their criminality or possibly even introduce them to extremism. I guarantee you the uninvited speaker that called Jews "termites" spent some time in the joint and I guarantee you he wasn't benefited by a criminal justice system that was genuinely committed to or designed for his rehabilitation. No doubt that dude, like so many others behind bars for an extended stay and in dire straights, turned to the NOI to help him get his life together - unaware of the antisemitic indoctrination that comes with the program.
Well, how about NOI's members and supporters push back against the anti-semitic propaganda? Why is that an essential part of NOI's work? I mean, if anti-semitism is an intrinsic part of NOI, then it's hard to tell the difference between their work in prisons and the work of the Aryan Brotherhood. I'm not saying you're wrong, but it's also important to point the finger first directly where the source of the problem flows from ...
We can focused on the ideology of radical Islam and point our finger at jihadism as the source of Isis and Boko Haram and other terrorist extremists but in order to stop it we need to also point a finger at the environments where those groups gain traction. Unstable miltataristic autocracies in impoverished unstable regions are breeding grounds for extremist ideologies to grow and spread giving “freedom fighters” an edge in passion and commitment to their cause. Prisons are toned down versions of unstable militaristic autocracies in impoverished unstable regions - they’re totally separate entities from our society where the underprivileged masses are brutalized and exploited and ignored. I don’t know what we can do to encourage Isis members to push back any more than I know how to encourage NOI members to push back, but I do know that at the very least we need to institute change in the environments of these war torn regions to deter the masses from seeing extremism as a rational resort and I do know we need to institute a similar change in our prisons which are essentially war torn regions in and of themselves.
