There were 187 murders in DC 2024. There were 382 in NYC in 2024.

So while DC spends as much per capita as NYC on policing they have horrible results by comparison. During this Fed surge there have been 4 murders in 23 days. That’s around 5 murders a month. If you expand those kind of numbers to the entire year that’s 60 murders a year, which would be the lowest murder rate in DC in recorded history.

Much of DC's issues are on the prosecution side: DC prosecutes and no papers at a much lower rate than NYC. Feds are not even getting more arrests than MPD. If you are a DC local, you know this. If you are one of the rando MAGAs who post here from other states (caught one idiot doxxing himself the other day), you do not understand that and the nuances.

You can’t prosecute murders that do not happen. I’d rather have hundreds more people not die a year and LESS crime than have more murders and more crime but prosecute the perpetrators more efficiently and effectively.

That is 4 murders between August 12 and September 4 in a city that was averaging 14 murders a month before the Feds came in. Those murder numbers are real and cannot be fudged. I’m not judging the change in crime based on every other crime stat that has been shown to be manipulated or underreported for political reasons in DC and other cities around the country in the past as well. Murder stats are the only thing people should put any faith in.

The show of force has more to do with fear of prosecution (to quote DC criminals, they historically avoided VA because "VA don't play" when it comes to crime). So staff up MPD and USAO.

But I do not want military presence for law enforcement as a permanent solution to crime. Slippery slope and quite expensive plus is off putting to our restaurant and tourism industries. Messy fed intervention harassing folks (like what happened at Coolidge HS this week causing utter chaos and more distrust of the feds) is not ideal. When did DC achieve a lower murder rate than having 4 murders in 24 days in the summer, which plays out to around 5-6 murders a month and between 60 and 72 murders a year?

Here is MPD data on murders from 1972 to 2002. The lowest number of murders in a year was 157 in 1985.

2009-2014 was the best period for the murder rate, with 88 murders in 2012. Still not as good as the murder rate between August 12 and September 4, 2025. The bottom of this page shows murders by year 2005-2024.

For reference, the 88 murders in 2012 was still horrible compared to the 419 people killed in New York City that year. DC had 635,700 people in 2012. New York City had 8.34 million. If New York City had DC’s murder rate that year they would have recorded more than 1,150 deaths, almost triple the murder rate of DC’s record low year. That’s how bad it is. Even a record low year in DC is three times as worse as New York City.
