If you sneak across our border, you are illegal. If you overstay your visa, you are illegal. What part of this do WaPo, CASA, RAZA and illegal apologists not understand? Being sympathetic to the plight of others is noble. But the US has only limited resources and charity begins at home. We have poor, uneducated inner city blacks, unemployed Appalachian whites and American Indians with desperate health and social needs. Yet, illegals cross our borders and suck up those resources before the American needy get them. Illegals even get faster medical care than veterans. This is wrong! And we need to get our priorities in order.
Actually, I think my priorities are in the right order. I agree that we need to get a better handle on illegal immigration, but building an expensive wall and breaking up families is not the way to do it. I'm a teacher so I work with many undocumented families - some who've been here for a decade or longer. It is really difficult to fix your status once you've overstayed a visa (and overstays count for 40% of undocumented immigrants.) They would be required to travel back to their home country and then apply to come back, which can take anywhere from six months to several years. For example, I have one parent who was brought here as a kid, has been married to a citizen for eight years, has two children and another one on the way. What would you suggest? She is currently working here legally under DACA. Send her back because her parents brought her here when she was 8, break up her family? Send her back pregnant without prenatal care?
If that person has been married to a citizen for eights years, she has nothing to worry about it, and you know it. Marriage to the US citizen wipes all sins.
