I travel a lot for work internationally and rely on in-laws, who own one of the homes with me, to care for the kids when I'm abroad. I often stay at the home I own with the in-laws myself. Renting a 2nd place in a better boundary when you don't live there seems to be much more of a gray area to me than owning homes which are not rented, at least not in their entirety, designating the one linked with the best school as a primary residence and paying taxes on it as such.
