I’m another person who lived in Petworth for about 5 years, starting pre pandemic, when frankly the neighborhood had a lot more going for it. The shootings, drugs, and shoplifting created just too stressful of an environment for me. All the families with small kids create a friendly, welcoming environment, but that wanes a bit once you realize the vast majority of those families will be gone by the time the kids reach 2nd grade.
I've lived in Petworth for a decade and more of those families are staying. Not a critical mass or enough to assuage critics, but people aren't able to afford the suburbs or WOTP and/or don't want to give up their interest rate. I don't know what's going to happen ultimately but it's not as easy or as desireable for families to flee as it once was.
