I've lived in Petworth for a decade and more of those families are staying. Not a critical mass or enough to assuage critics, but people aren't able to afford the suburbs or WOTP and/or don't want to give up their interest rate. I don't know what's going to happen ultimately but it's not as easy or as desireable for families to flee as it once was.

You're from an upwardly mobile immigrant household. Usually very snobby. I know cause I am from one of those too. No surprise you'd look down on an area like Petworth.

Where do you live and how much actual experience do you have with Petworth? From the sound of your post you’ve never lived there.


I have visited quite a few times(know a few people that live there) but yeah true never lived there myself, area does not appeal to me in the slightest. Don't have kids yet but thinking of it soon, and yeah the lack of safety and good schools, plus its distance from work and the parts of DC I frequent make it a no go for me.

I currently live in Clarendon. When I first moved to DMV lived in Georgetown (and stayed in that vicinity for a few years after graduation) before moving to Kalorama for a few years. My preference for area DC wise is very much Georgetown, closely followed by Dupont/Admo (the in-between point of those two areas ideally, so that you can walk to either one in a timely manner).

Why is it that people like you automatically go to race/play the race card as soon as you hear something that you don't like/goes against your beliefs.

For your information, I am neither white nor American (am an immigrant)...so maybe don't assume, as they say, "When you assume, you make an ass out of you and me"

We bought here over ten years ago and are still waiting to not hear gunshots and feel safe going out. At this point, I have given up. UGH

Lived there for 6 years - bought a rowhouse and had two kids. Worrying about the safety, lack of yard, schools where if you get into the right charter you’re schlepping all over town and still concerned about feeders. I think the idea of Petworth was something appealing, but with DC’s crime rate and still high costs “the idea” isn’t worth the squeeze. We sold our house at a good price though which afforded us a nicer and safer home with good schools in the burbs. Haven’t regretted our choice for a second.

I just moved back to SE because it was quieter than Petworth near the metro. There were 3 shootings on our block over the past year and agree about the rats. I dreaded walking through the neighborhood after sunset as a result. I was going to say that the CVS seems to be fully stocked again but a stray bullet shattered a window there a couple of weeks ago.

That said, much of Petworth is actually quiet. We were in a pocket unfortunately that was not worth the rent.

We live here and 5 years later very much question why we bought here. The violence is absolutely unbearable. The rats are insane. We hate going to the playgrounds - its rats and weed smell everywhere. We bought for ease of commuting pre pandemic and do not go anywhere near the metro or the craptastic georgia ave and new hampshire cross streets. the cvs is awful, that entire area is vile. Cannot wait to sell and peace out. The presence of lovely middle class families with little kids like ours do not make up for the rest of this trash atmosphere.

I go out in Petworth sometimes for bars and the beer garden. I live in Cleveland Park. I'm very cautious about Petworth lately because the last time I was there, there had just been a shooting at the Georgia Ave Metro station. I really like the area but reality is that the Georgia Ave Metro has random shooting on a regular basis. People unfortunately get caught in crossfire and killed in those situations. So recently I avoid Petworth.

I live in Petworth and I love it, but no way, maybe over by 16th Street Heights. I'm wonder what these super new builds will go for. I bet maybe at most 1.2 or 1.1, only because they seem big for the area and obviously totally new.

Maybe someday though!
