If VRSC could only get accepted into a top tier league like ECNL or GA on the merits of what they have actually accomplished as a club, they’d be several years, at best, from getting in. They hired MJ away from FCV a couple of years ago. Probably more money and a very easy job at a club where no one is expecting much. You don’t have to be Sir Alex Ferguson to realize that as a soccer club, you need to be in a better league than NCSL or EDP if you want to be able to able to attract more/better players and be seen as a “serious” option for those players and their parents. Evergreen is a nice facility and the improvements that they’ve done were much needed. Now you need better coaches and someone who is well connected and understands the landscape of youth soccer. With FCV still practicing at the Sportsplex, CC and crew were around often enough for conversations but even without that, most of the FCV guys had known each other for many years so MJ could call CC anytime and start the conversation. What ultimately convinced CC to agree to the move, I don’t know but I’m sure money and seemingly a lack on the part of TSJ to make field space in Loudoun County a serious priority were probably on that list. Both of which I’m certain Revolution leveraged in their pitch to CC. “Oh, by the way, we’re not going to rent field space to FCV after this year. Hope you guys have a plan!” Money and connections make the world go round. They always have and they always will. If you read any of the GA announcements for the new clubs that they accepted for next year, you’ll find that the one about Revolution is very unlike the others. No history of player development, no excellence in coaching, no proven record of accomplishments on the field, etc. It was vision and infrastructure. Raise your hand if you believe that. You can be certain that they’re hoping to cannabalize those existing FCV teams and then fill in the gaps with players from other clubs. The Fairfax Virginia Union announcement was a potential gift from the soccer gods to Revolution. Only time will tell how many of those players they can convince to come over but there are enough players/parents in this area who a chasing an ECNL or GA badge that they’ll have no problem filling rosters up. And then, if there are enough players/parents who don’t know any better, they’ll continue to fill up GA2, GA3, GA4, teams, etc. because $$$. How good their “real” GA teams will be remains to be seen but congratulations Revolution, at least you can now market to all the players who wanted an ECNL spot but couldn’t get it.
