No matter what, she needs to get that UMBC application in tonight! That will be her ticket out of the “bad choices” you listed. Tomorrow, go for CNU, ODU, SMCM, WPI, Muhlenberg, and/or Rose-Hulman. Add in Wooster later and then WVU if there is any steam left.
Just not sure that desperately flailing out apps to mediocre schools is a better approach than year off or community college. Among other things, if the OPs daughter is concerned with what her friends would think about community college, the girl might balk at CNU or ODU for the same reason.
These are not particularly mediocre schools mentioned! In fact OP’s DD could have a better experience both academically and socially at some of them. I don’t think OP has indicated major or career goals other than STEM. The details matter - engineering/CS is different than pre-med/bio/Chem. If the latter, I would argue she’s better off at a Wooster or Kalamazoo than UMD in terms of personal attention, good science, small classes and support for the med schol application process. If engineering or CS, obviously you need a school that has those programs but some really good ones like WPI were mentioned. I think the reference to OP not following instructions is that OP should have been cranking out last minute apps with DD, not asking about retaking the SAT. I think OP thinks that if it’s not a big state flagship her DD should just sit it out and I think that’s silly. There are plenty of solid schools her DD can go to and she can always transfer if she wants but it might turn out really well. Take ASU for example, huge school, east to get in, but the honors college is supposed to be really good and you can definitely get a solid education there if you put in the effort. I know a TJ student that went there for the $$$ and is now in a very competitive STEM PhD program.
