As a lawyer who has some familiarity with large companies and their data security, I find it laughable that people expect a school district to have similar security. If they set aside the budget for that, everyone would be furious. That's not what school administration is for, it's not what we want them to be skilled experts in.
I find it laughable that you say you're a lawyer, but you clearly didn't bother reading the article before commenting. You look silly... try not being so arrogant. This breach comes on the heels of at least a dozen smaller breaches, and another major breech from 2020 when they were hacked by MAZE. After the 2020 breach, a county judge ruled against Fairfax in a case related to leaked student records and Faitfax found themselves the subject of a federal civil rights probe by the government due to the hundreds of thousands of FERPA violations that Fairfax has incurred over the past 5 years. From the governor on down, Fairfax County Public Schools were made aware on numerous occasions that they were to get their house in order or else -- the governor even earmarked all of the funds they would need to correct the breaches, upgrade their system and get in compliance with securing students info. And as of this year, it's STILL a major point of contention because it STILL HASN'T BEEN DONE.
