I do not know why I care but as a Brazilian, I can't keep reading this over and over in this thread and not say something. He did not survive the Brazilian rainforest. The area of Brazil he was living in is more akin to the Australian outback than a rainforest.

The NYTimes had a whole article about it this weekend. As they described it, "The dusty, wild Brazilian savanna provided the perfect cover for Mr. Cavalcante. Here, cattle ranches stretch for miles, flanked by shrubs and parched forest."
