I have never lived in an area that cared about kids MORE than middle TN. Incredible philanthropy for schools and youth programs. The shooting is DEEPLY felt here. Please don't tell me that folks here don't care about kids' deaths. they are DEEPLY moved.
The same is true of eastern Tennessee.
Bullshit. If they were deeply moved they would have joined that protest at the Capitol. This is a state that enacted anti-trans legislation in the name of protecting children but will shrug at doing anything about guns after children are shot dead.
Actually, if you have been paying attention, the governor is looking to have armed security at all schools which, IMO, will do far more in protecting children. Probably not what you want, but it is action. And, protesting does nothing. Action does.
Typical right-wing policy response: Bring in more guns. We already know all cops are bastards. Most of them are pussies, especially in a school shooting. The answer is not armed guards at schools — that doesn’t make children safe and it doesn’t make them feel safe. They don’t need to see that, either. The answer is to BAN THE GUNS. Offer to buy them back and melt them down. Those who refuse? We take their guns by force. Pry them from their cold, dead hands if need be. Make them play out those legend in their own minds fantasies they have and see how it goes. Tennessee Republicans hate children. It’s a backwater, shithole state with a terrible football team too. But, yeah, I miss Pal’s.
You might want to do the math on that. There's 100+ million gun owners. If 3% resist, that's 3 million people most of whom likely have recent military experience with door to door fighting or are a criminal element with nothing to lose. There are 660k cops or so. The military, other than the national guard, can't intervene and the national guard stands around 440k. We would quickly descend into civil war if that sort of thing happened. The first gunshots of the Revolutionary war were from the British trying to sieze colonial arms and people in the whole "gun culture" cling to that sort of thing.
