Please tell me dreambox and lexia is not still happening for the younger grades.. they should not be on Ipads at all.
They built an hour into my 3rd grader's schedule for daily Lexia and Dreambox. It's its own class period. It's also a daily feature of my kindergartener's stations. We were told that teachers have use quotas they have to hit.
I have a kid with learning loss and learning disabilities and this is the intervention. ipad games. No data that these programs work, without 1:1teaching, to help SN kids learn. Zero
I have a kid with dyslexia and her tutor said that Lexia is a great, evidence-based tool. She was thrilled that DD is using it. APS is also more widely using OG (part of Duran’s plan) which is the best approach for all kids but especially those with LDs.
With respect, my 3rd grader can't use Lexia independantly and, I'm a horrible speller who doesn't know the rules so I can't help. Furthermore, kids with dyslexia often have slow response times and there's a LOT of repetition when a kid misses something b/c of response time which frustrates some. It's great that your child has an outside tutor. Clearly I"ll end up paying for that.
For kindergarten, the iPad station is the teacher helping the kids use Lexia. Do you really consider that better than the teacher providing actual in person instruction? It would be one thing if the kids did Lexia during periods when the teacher was working with other groups of kids, but that's not what's happening. It's replacing other small group teacher instruction.
I'm the other poster and I think all kids should be receiving quality literacy instruction in small groups. OG would be ideal. Lexia is also a great tool that can be used to supplement and provide additional specialized instruction for each child.
