I think that the people who circle the wagons and defend APS and Duran no matter what are being short sighted. I'm a Biden and McAuliffe voter but now we've got Youngkin and Miyares because people are so angry about the schools. Probably a Republican Congress next January. You might even get Trump back. If you keep saying people are dumb and angry and unreasonable for wanting their kids to be in school and receive high quality instruction, they are going to stop listening to you and vote for the other guys.
Shame on anyone who voted for Youngkin just because of schools. Sayings like "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" are cute, but when that leads someone back to supporting Trump (and Trump cronies) its downright dangerous, idiotic, and a slew of other things. Look, I get that people want their kids in school. I want my kids in school. I hate some of the things APS has done, but I appreciate a lot more. It is a hell of a lot easier to sit on this anonymous board criticizing people for how they're acting in an unprecedented an constantly evolving situation than to actually be the one(s) making the tough choices. There are enough angry people on this board that I think it is clear any superintendent would have people calling for him/her to go. Its been barely 6 weeks since I first heard of omicron and now we're in the largest surge of the pandemic. Models vary in predicting when the surge will end. Its all just constantly changing.

I find that very difficult to believe. This is an anonymous board after all, but if it is true you are complicit in anything the Republicans do that is antithetical to social progress. But you knew that.
I'm not that poster but my husband was a big Bernie supporter, canvassed for him and did some other campaign stuff. And he voted for Youngkin on schools. In general I would say that he was all in on Bernie's platform on economic inequality and is less concerned with some of the Democrats' social issues like guns and abortion. He's pro gun control and pro-choice but these are top line issues for him and so I don't think he had a huge issue with holding his nose and voting for Youngkin. It is what it is (and I didn't vote for Youngkin so don't feel the need to come at me on this).

And the elected School Board and County Board has only themselves to blame for Democrats statewide losses (including big shifts in NOVA that threw the election). They let all the governance fall onto the appointed Superintendent, then do ceremonial meetings where they don't do anything or take any responsibility. The voters only choice is to change their vote statewide.

Please tell me dreambox and lexia is not still happening for the younger grades.. they should not be on Ipads at all.
I have a kid with learning loss and learning disabilities and this is the intervention. ipad games. No data that these programs work, without 1:1teaching, to help SN kids learn. Zero
I have a kid with dyslexia and her tutor said that Lexia is a great, evidence-based tool. She was thrilled that DD is using it.
APS is also more widely using OG (part of Duran’s plan) which is the best approach for all kids but especially those with LDs.
With respect, my 3rd grader can't use Lexia independantly and, I'm a horrible speller who doesn't know the rules so I can't help. Furthermore, kids with dyslexia often have slow response times and there's a LOT of repetition when a kid misses something b/c of response time which frustrates some. It's great that your child has an outside tutor. Clearly I"ll end up paying for that.
For kindergarten, the iPad station is the teacher helping the kids use Lexia. Do you really consider that better than the teacher providing actual in person instruction? It would be one thing if the kids did Lexia during periods when the teacher was working with other groups of kids, but that's not what's happening. It's replacing other small group teacher instruction.

He gives high-level updates at board meetings. And our school give more details at PTA meetings.
There is no plan with real metrics or steps. There is only puffery. For that reason alone Duran needs to get out.
There are a variety of tools available for schools to come up with individual plans for each student based on their needs - each student requires different interventions.
Exactly. APE doesn't understand how APS classrooms work, how many resources our schools have to provide interventions. That's the plan. Be good schools that provide interventions when needed. But then APE has an agenda of tearing down APS so they're going to stick with their "no plan" talking point.
Yes an intervention for an ENTIRE grade level is a plan. And I’m the clueless one.
This might be a problem that screaming DEI at might not solve.
Not APE and sorry that doesn’t fit your narrative but when most of our students are behind and there is a huge learning loss the plan is just individual interventions by staff?!?!??? Sorry I think we need more than that it is a HUGE problem.
Sorry, well, then it sounds like YOU don't understand how teaching and learning work. Maybe talk to your principal.
+1
Does PP even have a kid in APS?
No. Or he or she is totally uninvolved and clueless.
Just note that absolutely no one has linked to any plan in school talk messages, school board slides or posted elsewhere. That's because it doesn't exist. Instead, they continue to insult those who are concerned about a lack of an actual plan for catching up students who are woefully behind.
Apparently when they lose an argument their solution is to insult their opponents. So mature.
I’m not your link b1tch. If you follow SB meetings you would have seen it. But clearly you haven’t so…
