I would contact a few rescues, describe what you are looking for, and ask for recommendations of specific dogs.  I've been very happy with this method even though I didn't get everything on the list I originally wanted.  Mine ended up being a slight shedder but he's small and the hair matches my couch, so it is minimal and you really have to look for it.

I do have several friends with havanese, though, and a well-bred, properly handled one appears to be a lovely companion.  it sounds like your son is responsible around dogs if people are having you two dog sit -- it is important for kids to understand dogs and have good dog manners, esp if you get a puppy who can develop bad habits more easily.  I have a friend who breeds Havanese and like any small dog if not cared for appropriately they can be snappy.  he has taken back a couple from families with small kids over the years because they didn't work out.
